Global SchoolNet Foundations Programs & Partners: Online Expeditions
© 2004 Global Schoolnet Foundation
With budget cuts leaving few funds for field trips, Internet “expeditions” are more attractive than ever. This site offers links to some of the best Web excursions, many of which are free after registration. Students can join real-time, in-progress expeditions, observe daily progress through web cams and still pictures, and read field dispatches. They can also interact with the explorers via email. Many excursions are archived, too, so that even though the actual journey is over, students can follow the trek’s documentation in chronological order. 2004 treks include a 660 mile solo journey to the North Pole by adventurer Wave Vidmar. Another expedition follows Max and Bailey, two Golden Retrievers who travel the U.S. in their Harley Davidson sidecars, bringing attention to people with disabilities and the dogs that assist them. Most expeditions offer extensive cross-curricular teaching materials that extend the experience beyond the computer. Global SchoolNet’s partners in these online excursions include The Discovery Channel and National Geographic, so you can be sure of quality content. Visit www.gsn.org/expeditions/ for more details.
