Children can learn about musical composition as they explore this open-ended creativity and music program. Four main activities include two composition areas, one for chamber music and the other for a rhythm band. By clicking on the musical staff, kids can place notes and hear their scores played by a dozen instruments. They can save and print out their compositions, too. There is also a drag and drop theme and variation activity that lets children experiment with songs they already know. A games area offers listening exercises for melody, rhythm and form. Rounding out the program is a 50-entry music encyclopedia. Although children will no doubt enjoy experimenting with this software, plan to be on hand to help out. The menus and tools bars are less than intuitive.
