The Cognitive Tutor is a full high school math curricula with courses titled Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Integrated Math Series and Quantitative Literacy Through Algebra. Each curriculum combines software-based, individualized computer lessons with collaborative, real-world problem-solving activities. Students spend about 40% of their class time using the software, and the balance of their time engaged in classroom problem-solving activities. The curricula are research-based and include activities such as thinking and writing about math. The software component provides immediate feedback and just-in-time help when students begin to struggle. It is also completely customizable for each student and will assess and record each student's progress. We found the software very comprehensive and well designed from a pedagogical standpoint, but in terms of usability, the multiple open windows needed to solve problems (scenario, worksheet, solver and graph windows) take some getting used to.
