Designed for children up to age 12, this is a virtual environment that runs on top of Windows, and basically splits your computer in two-- one desktop for the kids, and one password protected desktop for adults. The software consists of a security shield, which protects system settings and files, and the Magic Desktop, a children's program launcher and Internet browser. Parents decide which PC files, programs and websites kids can access, and each child can have personalized settings according to age and interests. The program launcher comes with ten activities (many of which are educational), and the software's interface is picture-based, so even very young children can use it. This is made by a Norwegian company, but is available for sale/download in the US via the web site. A trial version is available there as well. Additional content can be accessed for a subscription fee.
