Teaches: utility for limiting computer time

CTR Review

This is a timing system designed to let adults regulate how much time a child spends using the television, computers or gaming consoles (but not Game Boys). Parents set a Time Budget for each child, and then when your kids want to use an AC powered device, they sign onto EyeTimer, which then turns on the device via a small wireless transmitter with a 100 foot range. When time's up, the system turns off the device. The EyeTimer Software is controlled by a Windows-based computer (required), which acts as the "brain" of the system. It's reportedly tamper-proof, and also has an optional study mode, which allows your child unlimited access to computer study tools like the word processor or CD-ROM encyclopedia. The software alone costs $39.95, and switches for each external device you want to control (i.e., TV, game console) cost $50 each. It's always best if children can self-regulate their media use, and there's nothing to keep a smart child from simply disconnecting the timer and plugging directly into another outlet (tamper proof tape is included to prevent this). If an external timer is needed, however, this may be a solution.
