Switched on Sound: Movements in 20th Century Music
© 2003 erroyo
The third program in Duke University's lineup of educational software, this 2 CD set explores music in the 20th century. Much of the program is comprised of lectures by Professor Anu Kirk, and these are interesting, but Kirk's unique mannerisms and way of speaking can detract from the content. There’s lots to like about the program, though, which includes activities and timelines, plus plenty of musical segments from famous composers like Bach, Copland and Glass. The activities in each module ask students to analyze the music they hear, helping them better understand musical elements and the history behind each composition. A useful glossary is included on both the software and the accompanying printed Composition Notebook. The latter is a book of written exercises and critical thinking activities that ask students to write responses and explore concepts. Students who pursue the program through to its conclusion will likely learn a great deal. We did wish for more multimedia features, however.
