Teaches: music theory, from notes to ear training

CTR Review

This set of ten music games (exercises, really) teaches ear-training and reading of musical notes, rhythms, key signatures, intervals and chords. The program is not fancy in terms of graphics or programming, but it works. Each game has Play and Learn modes, the latter of which is supposed to teach the concepts, but this part of the program is weak. Fortunately, by just playing the games, kids can pick up on the essential skills and concepts (note names, rhythms, etc.) and this “active” learning may actually be a better way of securing the knowledge. Games include clicking on the letter that matches a note on the staff and choosing the right note to complete a rhythm. Again, it’s a very straightforward presentation, but well-leveled. For example, nine correct answers out of ten lets kids proceed to the next level. There are 240 levels in all (lots of practice!) and you can thankfully toggle off the nonstop praise of the Dolphin host. Records of progress can be kept for up to 300 students. This would work well in both home and classroom settings. Also see Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory 2.0.
