CTR Review

LeapFrog's Interactive Decodable book series is designed to give classroom teachers a library of leveled readers for their LeapPads. There are no computer managed instruction features with this series. The stories, by Suzanne Barchers and others, use a set of selected words, and as a result, some of the stories seem pretty clunky (e.g., Dick, Jane and Spot). We also noticed that at least one of the phonics cards was poorly designed (see the review of LeapFrog Phonics Skill Cards, Short Vowels: Cards LIL1-LIL5, selected at random from the series). Decodable words, sight words, and challenge words are included in each book with comprehension activities to facilitate class discussion. The phonics skill cards provide extra practice and increase the learning opportunities. The entire library package comes with 12 LeapPad units with headphones, AC adapters and batteries, 27 phonics skill cards (levels 1-6), and 26 books (levels 1-6). Note that there is also a Kindergarten Decodable Classroom Library (that we did not review) that contains 6 LeapPads, 12 Phonics skill cards (Levels 1-2) and 10 books (Levels 1-2).
