Teaches: utility for filtering and monitoring Internet use

CTR Review

See Net Nanny 5.5 (2008). Updated for 2002, this utility allows you to filter websites with adult content while providing age-appropriate content for your children. You can control online chat, time spent online and block file sharing of music, images and videos. The program works with "all major ISPs" including AOL, Earthlink, MSN and Yahoo!. Among the 25 listed "improvements" to this version are better filtering and blocking using both lists and keywords, control over some (but not all) instant messaging activity, a simpler installation and configuration, and the capacity to block pop-up advertising. You can also monitor Internet usage invisibly, and receive emailed reports on a user's activity. Other features include a fully editable database of blocked URLs and keywords, and the ability to limit total amount of online time per user. The program can be configured for up to 12 people. Note: We are in the midst of testing this and other filtering programs for an article in an upcoming issue of CSR. Our initial reaction is that seems powerful and complete, but is complex to set up. Plan on spending some time creating each user account to specifically meet the needs of each individual.
