Designed for students in middle and high school, this is a concept mapping utility for Palm OS handhelds. It's quite intuitive to use. Kids begin by drawing a circle on the screen, which becomes a center node. They type a name for the node (and an optional description) and then create another node in the same manner. Nodes can be connected via directional arrows which can be labeled to show relationships. The resulting maps can be as simple or as elaborate as the user desires. The software, which, at present, is downloadable free from the Web, also allows the students many options for sharing their maps. For instance, kids can beam their maps to other students or to the teacher or they can print them directly with the infrared port. Students can also sync with a desktop computer or post their maps on the Web. Examples of PiCoMaps and their uses can be found at http://www.handheld.hice-dev.org/picomapsc1.htm.
