Appropriate for both home and school use, this knowledge-packed toy lets children explore the Earth's seas. The toy measures 18x15 inches and can rest comfortably on a child's lap or on a table. A flat map of the world surrounded by picture icons serves as the display. Children use an attached "pen" and "point and touch" technology to pick places to learn about or select answers to questions. Eleven activities let children freely explore and partake in more directed exercises. The Voyager button lets kids click on any place on the map to hear it labeled, and kids can also click on the picture icons to learn about whales, fish and other sea life. More directed activities include finding certain places and animals, listening to the stories of famous sea explorers and locating sunken treasure by plotting grid coordinates. The audio is clear. From a learning standpoint, there's lots to like and little to complain about. The kids, on the other hand, felt that the device was less of a toy and more a learning tool, best suited, according to them, for classroom use.
