Homeroom.com is an online assessment and diagnostic tool for grades 3-11. It's features include more than 120,000 math and reading questions aligned to every state standard, major classroom textbook, and specific-state and multi-state tests. Teachers can use the web-based, browser-delivered system in several ways. They can quickly and easily create customized practice tests that are aligned with a state assessment or standard. They can then use the system's reporting and analyzing tools to track student or class strengths and weaknesses. They can also use the system to remediate. For each skill tested, Homeroom.com offers 10-15 related academic activities, including lesson plans, online activities and teaching tips. Student and parents can access the system to receive assignments and quizzes and to monitor their progress. Tests can be completed online or printed out, a nice option for classes with limited access to computers. Test questions can be multiple choice or open-ended. We found the service easy to use (very intuitive), and potentially extremely useful for both lesson planning and assessment purposes.Currently, only reading and math tests can be generated, but a language arts component is in the works. The material is aligned to almost all 50 state's standards and to 30 popular math and reading textbooks. Homeroom.com is now being used in more than 400 schools across the country. District and school site licenses are available at approximately $6.00 per student per year. Individual classrooms can access the service for $200 per year. On-site teacher training costs $1500 per day. Major competition includes Lightspan and EduTest.
