One in a line of similarly designed toys, this product teaches about ten endangered species: humpback whale, panda, snow leopard, orangutan, bridled nailtail wallaby, mountain gorilla, black rhinoceros, America crocodile and Galapagos giant tortoise. The toy measures about 12x18 inches and features a flat screen with pictures of the animals that light up. Buttons along the bottom let children hear about each species' size, diet, range, threats, populations, etc. Children can use the toy in an open-ended exploratory fashion, or they can play a multiple choice, true/false quiz game with over 1000 questions. The toy's speech is clear and there's an automatic turn off function. Missing are volume control and a headphone jack. We tested the toy in both home and school settings and it was well liked by kids and grown-ups. There aren't enough functions to keep kids coming back over time, so home users may want to donate their units to classrooms after awhile.
