4/28/2016 - Producer Update: "Our product, Bodie, California: Life in a 1880s Mining Town is no longer available on CD-ROM. However, we hope to create an ebook version of this product that will available sometime this year."Students visit the ghost town of Bodie, California— what used to be a bustling mining town of 10,000 people. This CD brings the town to life in an interesting combination of video, photos and drawings of the past and present. Three guides, including a local librarian, are on hand to tour the present-day town, which has been turned into a California State Historic Park. As kids explore, they can click on a special To The Past icon, which transports them back to scenes from the 1880s. They read letters at the post office, check out the grave markers at the cemetery or visit the old schoolhouse to learn what kids' school days were like. Most of the information is delivered via text, much of it narrated by actors playing the roles of local inhabitants. While students are exploring, they're charged with a mission— to discover information about the lives of a collection of seven Bodie residents. The CD comes with a teacher's guide with reproducibles and lesson plans. This is a very engaging and educational program that quickly lures kids into the study of American history.
