Although perhaps best suited for six- and seven-year-old kids, this early version of LEGO My Style: Kindergarten shows promise. Children travel with five colorful LEGO DUPLO characters to the Math Toy Store, the Wild West Language Corral, the Prehistoric Art Cave and the Haunted Castle of Music. Depending on which character they select, kids will find a variety of math, reading, music and art games, each one somewhat tough for kindergartners, but generally well designed. At the Wild West Corral, for instance, children encounter storytelling activities, word recognition games and practice with prepositions. Many features of the CD are strong. The graphics and humor are top-notch, and the theme of earning LEGO pieces was a hit with testers. The trouble is that many of these innovative games are quite difficult and fail to give kids enough help when they struggle. One addition and subtraction activity plunges kids right into number equations like 4 – 2 = , forgetting to give concrete visual clues and never showing children how to figure out the problems. We look forward to seeing the final version of this program and hope that the levels are more forgiving.
