Using this program is a bit like visiting the United Nations. You've got your choice of six foreign language tutorials: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Japanese. Each varies in terms of activities and ease of use. All offer games, conversation practice, vocabulary drills and more. The Italian tutorial, for instance, teaches 10,000 words but is tough to get started with. It does have a great electronic flash card system, however, that really helps you learn new vocabulary. Other features of the Italian tutorial include record and playback options and comparison with native speakers. In addition to the six language tutorials, the package includes a nifty little translator that lets you change English language documents to foreign language documents in a snap. In all, this is a very useful set of CDs, but serious foreign language students should know that there are other programs that are easier to use and more up to date in terms of multimedia. These are dated, but solid programs, several of which are older Transparent Language CDs.
