If educational portals were nickels, we'd be rich. This free, ad-supported service, first released at FETC 2000, makes it easy to create your own personal teacher's "home page" where you can post assignments for each one of your classes. The initial setup is easy. Just pick a screen name and password, and submit your information. Sunburst e-mails you a confirmation. Next, you can sign into the site and write down specific assignments for each class. When your students log onto your page (they also need a password), they can see the assignments. Other components that you can add to your home page include news, weather (not working when we checked) and the ability to search the Internet using a completely unfiltered search engine. Because the service is owned by Sunburst/Houghton Mifflin, you'll see banners and ads for HMI/Sunburst software. The bottom line? It is easy to setup and use, and it works if you can put up with the promotion of Houghton Mifflin products.
