Apple's iPad is a great way to deliver quality musical listening experiences to children. This app contains five games based around a large library of authentic music clips from Analektaa, a Canadian music publisher. The five activities include Tempo (sort fast or slow musical passages); Pitch (sort sounds by pitch); Intensity (listen to musical strands, identifying the parts that are accented, soft, loud); Timbre (sort songs according to whether they are produced by winds or strings); and Harmony (place musical excerpts into two groups -- consonant or dissonant). There are 15 activities which vary in quality. For example, in some games you don't know when you have completed your goal (there is no progress indicator). But it is easy for a child to jump to another activity, providing you have purchased the full version of the app. The app is in French or English, and there's a bonus activity where you use the iPad's camera for motion detection to match a beat. You can download a version with one activity unlocked. Mazaam is the joint project of François Mario Labbé, president of the record label Analekta, and the violinist Angèle Dubeau.
