Update June 2021 - Now in it's fifth year, the Nintendo Switch game console is enjoying They say that good things come in small packages. In this case, Nintendo managed to shoehorn nearly all of the power of the Wii U into a single book-sized screen with two tiny controllers. The only thing missing is the CD-ROM drive, and the ability to play your library of Wii or Wii U disks. Switch software will come on cartridges that you buy in stores. You'll also be able to download titles. The two, tiny controllers are modern marvels -- packing controls, haptic feedback and motion control technology into a device that fits in your hand. Librarians note that they could be easily lost or stolen (one Nintendo staffer recommended installing RFID stickers on the controllers, along with an alarm system). The system consists of the book-sized console (with a clear touch screen), two "Joy-Con" controllers called Joy-Con (L) and Joy-Con (R), a Joy-Con grip (to which two Joy-Con are attached to be transformed into one regular sized controller), a set of wrist straps, a Nintendo Switch dock (which holds the main touch screen console and connects it to a TV), an HDMI cable and an AC adapter. The controllers come in blue or red, at the same price. The system connects to a TV via HDMI, or can switch into an on-the-go handheld with a 6.2-inch capacitive touch screen. So you can take your game with you, on the fly, leaving the charging cradle plugged into the TV. Nintendo promises six hours of battery life depending on game play (three hours for Legend of Zelda, for example). While away from home, Nintendo Switch can be charged by plugging the AC adapter into the console’s USB Type-C connector. Two Joy-Cons can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip. They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends for two-player games. This game system travels very well -- in the back of a van or on an airplane. Each Joy-Con offers a full set of standard controller buttons; and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible. Nintendo Switch features include the ability to take instant screenshots of gameplay for social media, and the ability to work with amiibo or Skylander figures. An IR Motion Camera can detect the distance, shape and motion of nearby objects in specially designed games. Both controllers have haptic features so you can feel some games. Up to eight controllers from different sets can be synced for local wireless play, say, for a game of Super Smash Bros. The system will support online Wi-Fi multiplayer gaming. Nintendo also unveiled a new online subscription service that will begin with a free trial at launch. Users invite friends to play online, set play appointments and chat with one another as they play compatible games.
