This is AR (augmented reality) type of snap together chemistry kit that combines physical models with an app that brings the molecules to life. First quick chemistry refresh: Atoms tend to be more stable, or “happy,” when they have certain numbers of electrons whizzing around their cores. They find the extra electrons from other atoms. When atoms share or exchange electrons, they stick together to make compounds like water. This set of 52 atom models represent 16 elements. You can either explore, or try to assemble as many actual elements as possible by combining the metal tips on the ends of the silicone rubber arms. Each magnet represents the free electrons. You check your work with the free app that accompanies the set. The app, designed by Schell Games, runs on iOS for iPad or iPhone, and uses the camera to "see" the molecule (much like a QR code or two-dimensional barcode). The publisher says the app can recognize "tens of thousands of molecules" but it contains detailed information on about 120 of the most important. You are shown how the molecule is used, it's properties and potential hazards. The app includes guided quests that ask you to discover new molecules, and it tracks your progress.
