Shape Gurus

See also Highlights Shapes. Basic geometric shapes (squares, circles, triangles and so on) come to life, in this series of 18 mono-touch puzzles that build onto one another. Each asks you to drag and drop shapes onto their outline in order to build a scene. The formula is tried-and-true, and it works. You keep sorting because you want to see what lies ahead, and the clear verbal labels help you make the sound/symbol association. In this app, you learn by doing. You start by cracking open an egg, which lets you build a bird's nest out of triangles and rectangles. In the last puzzle, you build a rocket that blasts into space, then you start over. We liked how the puzzles get progressively harder. Options let you reset progress (which is bookmarked for one child automatically). The game is playable in 12 languages: English (US + UK), Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and South Korean. The English narrator is sugary. But there's no multi-touch, which makes this app hard for more than one child to share.
