Steve Reich’s Clapping Music
© 2015 Touch Press
Music teachers, band directors, or bored middle-schoolers should download this free app. It's a sophisticated rhythm-copying test that builds your fine motor skills as well as your ability to play copy-cat with a great musical mind -- in this case musician/composer Steve Reich. High scores are earned by precise pattern matching. If you make mistakes your score drops. There are three levels -- all are challenging. You can use the app to tap in time with the constantly shifting pattern, and progress through all of the variation. The simple interface changes color as you progress through the piece. The app is free with no in-app purchases, but you are asked if you'd like to attend workshops or perform the piece live. This is a one-trick pony. If you're looking for a game experience, this isn't the app for you. This app was created by the London Sinfonietta in collaboration with Queen Mary University London and Touchpress. The app is free because it was supported by the Nesta’s Digital R&D Fund for the Arts, the Arts & Humanities Research Council and public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
