What to learn how to make an app? MIT App Inventor (formerly called App Inventor for Android) is designed "to make it easy to do real-time programming." It is available as a free download from http://appinventor.mit.edu/ for Android-based devices (that means not for iPad), although it is possible to download the software onto a Windows or Macintosh computer, to be run in emulation mode. You are told to sync your tablet and your laptop via Wi-Fi, so you can debug your code in realtime. App Inventor was originally developed by Google by a team lead by Mark Friedman. The site includes documentation and educational content, and this is being licensed under the Creative Commons so it can be shared. In order to log in to MIT App Inventor you need a Google account, which is subject to Google's Terms of Service for accounts, and the information you provide to Google is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. MIT has no access to your Google account or the information you provide for it other than the account email address, which we may used to contact you.
