Responsive, playful and adaptive, this early math experience contains developmentally appropriate early math problem solving opportunities that make it an excellent addition to any school or home iPad. After they sign in (which requires typing a name the first time), children are introduced to six activities with challenges that adjust automatically. Because most of the problems incorporate multi-touch features, collaborative play is possible. There's variety in the answers -- sometimes it's multiple choice; other times you sketch the numeral. A visual helper acts as a launching sequence for the first activity, showing rather than telling. The more you play, the more items you collect to decorate a human-like creature, that finds its way into the math problems. Despite being made in Australia, this app will map onto any US early math curriculum, providing opportunities to manipulate, drag, balance, or sketch whole numbers. Formal learning objectives include developing number sense; naming numbers; counting to 100; connecting number names, numerals and quantities up to 30 (including zero); subitize (quickly count) small collections of objects in dice patterns, ten-frames and random patterns; conceptually subitize larger collections of objects in two or more dice patterns or ten frames; start counting from numbers other than one; count on from numbers other than one; skip count by twos, threes, fives and tens; count and skip-count forwards and backwards; practice place value by composing numbers to 99 using tens and ones; create equality using balance; add to and subtract from a hidden total to practice mental arithmetic and counting on and back; solve simple addition and subtraction questions up to 20; and practice writing numerals. All of these are worth mentioning because this app presents these concepts in a playful setting. Note. See also Quick Math+ (2013).
