Teaches: An online store for the Amazon Kindle

CTR Review

If you have a Kindle Fire and a child, you need to know about Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, the subscription-based program that combines books, games, videos and TV onto one screen. As of November 2014, we counted 3,145 titles (far fewer than Amazon's advertised 8,000), which are mostly Kindle eBooks including Island of the Blue Dolphins. Famous brands are heavily represented, including Sesame Street (29), PBS Kids (41), Nickelodeon (210), Disney (102), Houghton Mifflin (38), Kindle Books (2,551), Amazon Instant Video (357 and Android Apps (212). We were disappointed by the Android app selection. While there are a few safe choices, the pickings are limited. This library doesn't come close to comparing with the selections for children in iTunes (we roughly calculate a 1:20 ratio). We do like the philosophy of giving children the freedom to choose. Amazon FreeTime is on the right track, but it needs improvement. The cost for one child is $36/year, or $3/month per child. You can add up to four children for $10/month. Need to know: Watch the internal storage limits on your Kindle. 8 GB is not enough when combined to the ability to freely download apps.
