myON (www.myON.com), is a "smart" (adaptive) cloud-based reading system built upon a library of 7942 "enhanced digital books" from 36 publishers that can be accessed by tablet (iPad or Android) or PC. It supports more a whole-language support, and is less instructional. Individual records are tracked, including the number of books read, the level, and the time on each book. Students are also asked to rate and write a review of each book, and after every five books read, they are given a closed-passage test. The social features make it a bit like a giant cloud-based book club or library -- you can see what titles are popular with others, and write reviews with ratings of your own books. An automatic bookmark system lets you stop a book, and pick up where you left off in case your reading session is interrupted. An internet connection is required. MyON is a business unit of Minnessota-based Capstone, was launched May 2011 as a privately held subscription-based digital publishing platform. Content is provided by 36 publishers (including Disney, Capstone Press, Highlights for Children, Compass Point Books, Heinemann-Raintree, Picture Window Books, and Stone Arch Books) with titles for each subject area, genre, and reading level. Books are stored in the cloud, and accessed by password. Lexile levels (word difficulty) is provided by MetaMatrics All titles include reading supports and are leveled using The Lexile Framework for Reading. The supports include an embedded dictionary, highlighting and recorded audio. The cost structure is complicated. myON is sold as an annual license to various organizations and the fees vary based on the length of the license, the size of the library and the size of the district, as well as the amount of training required.
