12/1/2016 Update 2016 the iPad Mini comes in two models -- the iPad Mini 2 ($260) and the faster, more powerful iPad Mini 4 ($400). Currently the best dollar to power ratio is the 32 MB iPad Mini 2 Wi-Fi edition. The 16 MB version has been discontinued. We don't recommend getting the cellular version. Both are excellent options for a child's tablet. Update 2015: The 16 GB model price for the iPad Mini 2 has been lowered to $270 for the 16 GB version of the iPad Mini 2 (with retinal display). The iPad Mini Air and older iPad Air now starts at $400. Update 2013: The 16 GB model price has been lowered to $300 ?for the 16 GB non-retinal, 2012 edition. This device can run all iPad content (the iPhone or iPod Touch can’t). It represents the best content/dollar ratio. Make sure to budget for a protective case.
