Note: there is an updated "Read and Play" edition. Released on cue for spring (2010) commencement, the electronic edition of Dr. Seuss' classic graduation story costs $3.99, and automatically adjusts to either the small screen of an iPhone, or the larger iPad version. There are three modes: Read to Me (the narration starts automatically when a page is swiped), Read it Myself (touch pictures or the text to hear it read or described) and Auto Play (the story is presented, slide-show-style). Each page is turned with the swipe of a finger, and illustrated with swooping animation, using a Ken Burns effect, to highlight specific scenes. You can toggle the sound effects on or off. As with other Oceanhouse eBooks, you can tap any picture to see it labeled -- in some cases with the word that zooms right out of the text on the page, creating a good early reading experience. If you're looking for "finger candy" (hot spots hidden in the illustrations), you'll be disappointed with this app. However, the best thing about any Dr. Seuss storybook is that the illustrations are so good, your imagination does the animating.
