Yet another video harvesting service for kids launched last month, this one with a distinctly open-source, wiki feel. "You watch, you know" was designed by Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger; and the result is a clean, easy to use collection of 11,365 videos (as of 11/15) contributed by an open source community, pulled mostly from services, primarily YouTube. Once the video is posted, it can be rated or commented on. Because it is a wiki format, you have complete control over the description, editing as you like. Other useful features include a sliding age-bar, so you can search by age, and a hierarchical subject listing. The site was self funded by a "Memphis-area philanthropist" who contacted the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. They in turn hired Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger to plan a new, non-profit educational video service. The advisors to the project include Chris Dede and Larry Lessig (Stanford and Creative Commons). So does it work? Clearly it's in its early stages, but the focus appears to be on quality over quantity, and at just 30 days of age, one can guess that the trajectory is right. Plus, as Wikipedia and Google have shown, the price is right.
