Spore Hero Arena

Our testers were less-than-enthused about Spore Hero Arena for the Nintendo DS, a title not to be confused with Spore Hero for the Wii (see separate review). Designed for 1-4 players, the DS version involves moving your creature around, eating and fighting to increase in abilities and power, and then dueling against the other creatures in an effort to evolve, and become the Galactic Champion. The resemblance to Pokémon should be noted, with the exception that these battles are fast-paced and in real time (not turn-based). The story (reading required) tells you about how a meteor collides with your galaxy-bound ship. You are forced to crash-land on an alien world. Evil has followed you and is spreading chaos throughout the planet. You create your own unique Hero creature and guide it from planet to planet as you fight enemy creatures, collect new parts and gain upgrades. As you defeat each local champion, you will unlock special abilities for your hero. You can combine these special abilities, parts, and upgrades to create your own fighting styles. You can also play with up to three friends locally or with one friend over Wi-Fi. Testers found the first level to be frustrating, but once passed it, enjoyed the fighting. There are two game save slots. If you have the time to put into this game, it can grow on you. Otherwise get Spore Hero instead.
