Teaches: a utility for parents

Every new parent knows the distinct scent of a dirty diaper, and the anxiety that comes with if it happens to be while on a New York City subway. That's what led Lara Serebrier Paul, with the help of her one year old son, to create iKidNY. The $2.99 iPhone/iPod Touch app combines Google Maps with a database of 2000 playgrounds, libraries, restaurants, changing tables and subway elevators. With the help of a programmer in Wisconsin, found on Guru.com, she was able to complete the app in about four months, and take the application live this week. So, say you're in the Financial District when your diaper disaster strikes. Touch "find closest to me" in the changing table category, and then follow the path to the Borders at 100 Broadway (I called this particular Borders, posing as a new father, sure enough, they said that my stinky baby was welcome on their public changing table). "This is a child friendly city, but navigating with a baby can be a challenge. The lack of subway elevators really are the biggest challenge, " said Serebrier Paul. Since the app went live, she's been collecting more child-friendly locations from the app users, making iKidNY a community effort. As for changing the diaper? Sorry, there's no app for that.
