Attention parents and software designers, this MMOG (Massive Multiplayer Online Game) found at www.wizard101.com is both well designed and addictive, but can also be pricey (up to $10 a month). Since its launch last fall, it has become a crowded after-school destination, for good reason. The signup process is free and open to all. The beautifully designed Harry Potter-like graphics (which can be adjusted to your graphics card), narration and theme work like honey to pull kids in. And if you're not careful, you'll start playing as well. Other noteworthy features include both constructed and text (with filter) chat system, an orchestrated sound system, and a battle system that is fun and easy to play. After you log in, you must download a small file and install the program on your hard drive. This application will only work on Windows computers. After you design your avatar (either male or female), you go through a tutorial which teaches you how to collect, compete in turn-based matches, and move around the world. Your goal is to gain in skill, collect things, and see if you can outsmart other players in the card-based battle system. The areas are fun to explore. You can discover Samoorai cows, or an ancient Egyptian-inspired land where the treasured relics are being carted off by dogs from another world. Content includes 101 collectible spells and seven schools of Magic (each with its own style), as well as the ability to adopt pets, a variety of outfits and accessories for your Wizard avatar. There are also mini-games that challenge players and provide a place to rest and rejuvenate after duels. A family pricing plan is available, making multiple accounts possible -- helping to make this a game that both parents and children could enjoy together. Our only advice is to make sure your child understands the full cost of this game before he or she starts playing. It could cost you $120/year for a full membership, although a unique micropayment lets you unlock individual areas for as little as $1. If you're looking for a state-of-the-art MMO, look no further than Wizard101. See also Free Realms.
