This online playspace allows you to design your own virtual dollhouse. You start by registering, and then receive your free Victorian dollhouse. You can then decorate it by choosing from 65 free items including furniture, paint, and wallpaper. There is no chat on Digital Dollhouse and members cannot share personal information. You can create a friends list that lets you view other members' dollhouses and give virtual items. The dollhouses are designed by cultural historians who have selected every item based on the time period of the house. Some of the items include historical facts so you can learn about the house. There are three different types of memberships offered. The free basic membership includes one Victorian dollhouse, 65 items to decorate your house with, and access to the Boutique where you can purchase additional items. The Deluxe membership is $6/month and includes the same features as the free membership, but also gives you a free virtual pet, access to premium items (such as Museum portraits), and 1000 Digital Dollhouse coins (ddCoins) per month which can be used to purchase furniture and accessories for your house. The premium membership is $10/month and also gives you a free Face Doll and 2000 Digital Dollhouse coins per month. This is the catch. The site lures your child in with the free membership, then uses a velvet rope approach by presenting you with premium features that require you to pay. You can purchase ddCoins in the Boutique in varying amounts using a credit card (one ddCoin = 1 cent). You can then use your ddCoins to purchase furniture, decor, animated pets and characters for your home.
