Fast-paced and fun, the Nintendo DS version of this action game lets you take on the role of a young girl (Penny) and her dog (Bolt) from the television series "Walt Disney Pictures Presents Bolt." After you choose one of the game save slots, you start in the first of five show inspired levels. For those familiar with the program, the content comes from Italy and Russia, where you fight against a bad guy named Calico in order to save Penny's dad, and the world. It's a typical Spy vs. the world-type cartoon. As you jump, smash and climb through the maze-like 3D platforms, you collect items including laser vision, a sonic bark, and a stun cloud that you launch by blowing into the Nintendo DS microphone. While none of these types of features are particularly novel, they're combined nicely in an easy to use setting. There's plenty of problem solving and reading is minimal. Note that younger players may need some help. Two-player features include two games where you can team up to fight the same enemy, as long as the other player has a copy of the game. Although the target audience for both games is 6-11, the console version is rated E10+ while the DS is rated E -- both for Cartoon Violence, of which there is certainly no shortage. Finally, this game comes with Disney's "D-Gamer" features, which lets children upload high scores and chat, providing they've signed up with Disney. Developed by Avalanche Software for Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii - $50, PS2 - $30 and PC - $20 and by Altron Corporation for DS - $30.
