Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time
© 2008 Nintendo of America
We've reviewed 38 Pokémon titles to date. So what's so different about number 39? This is the first time you can become a Pokémon, which, to a seasoned Pokémon player, means a lot. Other aspects of the game, such as the general maze format and ability to trade items with other players via Wi-File remain the same. There are also no shortage of duels, which are needed in order to advance in the game. Note that this is the twin title to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, which shares content. You start with a personality test, before embarking on a journey to find out why you've become a Pokémon. As the story goes, you must try and stop another bad Pokémon from stopping time and plunging the world into darkness. Instructions are provided making it easy for beginners. The maps are randomly generated, making every mission different. As you move through the dungeon, you're location is highlighted on an overhead map -- like exploring the tunnels of a mine. Playing the game requires reading dialog boxes and interpreting data from tables, which automatically tracks your location in the game, powers, inventory, health and so on. It is an excellent exercise in logical thinking, spatial reasoning (e.g., navigating a maze), reading and interpreting data. For example, there are 490 different Pokémon, each with unique abilities. Progress is saved automatically. If you meet another player with another copy of this game or Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, you can connect your DS units via Wi-Fi and compete, or perhaps cooperate on one of the expedition teams. You can also use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to rescue friends in trouble or send out an SOS if you need rescuing so there are social opportunities with this game as well. Like previous Pokémon titles, this new addition to the line won't disappoint even the most seasoned Pokémon player. Parents should note that this title can be addicting. Because children get very engaged, they can get asocial when playing. That's one reason to get a second copy so you, or another child can play along. You can save one game per cartridge. Also see Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness. Created for Pokémon Software by Chun Soft.
