Note: iMovie '09 offers some major improvements over '08, including some powerful editing options. Dramatically redesigned from older versions (6.x and earlier), iMovie ’08 (version 7.0 and higher) is a part of Apple's iLife '08's software suite. It is designed to simplify the archiving and storing of videos for use with iTunes, as well as to quickly edit movies. There are fewer editing features and a less intuitive interface than the older iMovie. If you're looking for the easy-to-use, powerful movie editor that older versions of iMovie used to provide, you won't unfortunately find it in this edition of iMovie. It might be time to migrate to Windows Movie Maker, Final Cut Express ($400) or Adobe Premiere ($800). This edition of iMovie does have some notable features. It organizes videos as they are imported and provides one click uploading to YouTube, your .Mac account (naturally), or other Apple video devices (iPhone or iPod). This edition also supports standard and high definition video, as well as DV, HDV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and AVCHD. In addition, it is important to note that while you can download older versions of iMovie for new Macs, Apple technical support told us they won't promise that it will work correctly with the new versions of iTunes, iPhoto or other iLife '08 software components. So you really don't have the choice.
