Dry and clunky, this DVD game is based on content from the Brain Quest Question & Answer Decks created by Brighter Minds for Workman Publishing. The DVD game claims to be animated, but the explanations can't be bypassed, giving you the feeling of being trapped in an elevator with an elementary curriculum coordinator. While there are 500+ multiple choice questions, our tester (age seven, entering second grade and a big fan of the cards) thought many of the questions were too easy. For example, "How many sides does a triangle have?" and, "If you score a touchdown, what sport are you playing—football, soccer, or baseball?" Some were more challenging, such as: "What is the largest two-digit number?" There was no score keeping of correct answers and no multiplayer mode to compete against another player. Parents liked the explanation to the answers, although those too can't be skipped. The good news is that the box also includes a mini Brain Quest card deck with additional questions. Our tester, Daniel, played through the entire deck of questions on a car ride, preferring it to the DVD. This is one example of when technology does not necessarily make traditional print better.
