Stardoll.com
© 2007 Stardoll AB
Originally called paperdollheaven.com and produced in Sweden, Stardoll is a well-designed online creativity experience that combines elements of MySpace.com with doll creation. You drag and drop clothing items onto paper doll templates. It is possible to make and save a doll that looks like you, called a "MeDoll" using a diverse number of hairstyles, skin tones, eye-colors, noses and mouths. There are also over 400 celebrities, such as Oprah and the Olson Twins, with related sets of clothing items and accessories. As of May 2007, there were no ads or sponsored content. The site makes money by selling "star dollars" which can be used to purchase more items. You get about 10 star dollars for one real dollar, and 25 free star dollars when you first sign up. Registration is fast and easy. There is also a chat room function to this site that lets you enter your doll in fashion shows, or vote for other dolls. The chat is filtered, but not as restrictive as most typical children's sites. As a Flash-based creativity experience, this is very well-designed. We liked the diversity of body images in the doll templates, unlike Barbiegirl.com. Once you register, you can store up to ten dolls and post a personal presentation page where you can tell the world about yourself and your interests. There is also a message center and a diary that can be public or private.
