For the price of 30 iTune songs, you get 20 preloaded Kidz Bop selections, plus the player and earbuds. Not a bad deal; certainly a consideration for making a long car trip seem shorter. About the size of an iPod, the Playaway products (www.playawaydigital.com) are known for wrapping affordable hardware around content like audio books. They remind you of the onetime use approach to MP3 players; yet, they're more notable for the features they don't have — there are no USB cables, CDs to rip or burn, downloads, online stores or batteries to recharge. Just turn it one on, put in the headphones, and you're ready to go. There's a tiny LCD screen that displays track number and time remaining. The device is powered by one AAA battery that lasts 12 hours. There is is also a snap-on lanyard so you can wear it around your neck. The sound quality is good, although the volume can get very loud — probably something that would most certainly cause raised eyebrows in the audiologist community. The 20 songs on Volume 1 feature the Bobby Kid's Choir singing highly engineered, musically impressive arrangements that make you feel (if you're over 30) that you're in seventh grade and in love again.
