Turn a Game Boy Advance into a pocket encyclopedia with this unusual reference, originally released in 2004 for the Palm and Pocket PC. Using sets of menus, children can access generic information about Math, Algebra, Geometry, English, Computer Basics, Geography, American and World History, Government and Science. There's a lot of general content, but little depth on any given subject. For example, a student needing to find the atomic weight of Meitnerium could visit the Periodic Table of Elements (displayed lengthwise on the small screen) and click on the symbol. There's other basic information, but that's about it. Information on big topics, such as Mexico, is also limited to basic facts. Some animations are available, including cell division and three-dimensional rotations of geometric shapes. As many as 60 screens can be bookmarked and accessed at a later date. Other features include a conversion calculator (such as Fahrenheit to Celsius) and a pronunciation guide, with common phrases pronounced in English. There's also a set of flash cards with content from the ACT or SAT. While using a GBA as an educational reference is a novel idea, students we showed it to doubted they would use such a resource if they had access to any search engine such as Google. Perhaps if they were stuck on a desert island, they'd use it. Would they pay $60 for it? Not likely.
